At the request of the municipality, the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, will hold a meeting in the first half of February in Gran Canaria with Councilor Pablo Rodríguez, head of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands, "to directly and effectively address pressing projects demanded by our municipality," says the municipal president, who thanks the councilor for "his willingness and interest in assisting us in order to advance mainly in solutions related to the lack of housing, one of the major problems facing the municipality."
Due to the same need and the status of the file, Yaiza prioritizes the construction of more than one hundred homes on the 40,000 square meter plot ceded by the City Council to the Government of the Canary Islands in Montaña Roja. The local administration already sent last week the urban planning compliance report of the basic urbanization project of the plot and construction of 136 homes for social rental so that the regional Executive can finalize the execution project and tender the works.
And it is not the only approach that Yaiza will reiterate to the Canary Islands in terms of housing. The conditions are in place for the purchase of already built homes in the Los Ajaches residential area of Playa Blanca, which is a private development under a protected housing scheme for affordable rent, where the Government and the Island Council have already confirmed the acquisition of 42 homes.
“Determination” with cruise ships
On the other hand, Yaiza is still waiting for "greater determination" from Canarian Ports to confirm the docking of medium-sized cruise ships in the port of Playa Blanca: "it is an old municipal demand based on the technical conditions of the port facility and a report commissioned by the same entity Canarian Ports on the luxury cruise market and its socio-economic impact in Yaiza, which places an average of 20 annual calls in Playa Blanca, which would mean one million euros for the local economy."
Also of concern to the City Council is a solution to the road traffic on the LZ2 road in the section that connects Yaiza and Playa Blanca. "We have proposed the study of a road duplication project, but we want to weigh other alternatives and we need to know the opinion of the Autonomous Community and the Island Council." In view of Yaiza's request, Councilor Pablo Rodríguez proposed to involve in the meeting the managing director of Canarian Ports, José Gilberto Moreno, and the general director of Road Infrastructure, Rosa Ana Melián.
