The Yaiza City Council, in charge of charging the entrance fee to the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, has collected 144,000 euros in the first seven months of the year. This has been confirmed by sources from the council to La Voz.
In the Los Ajaches Natural Monument are some of the most spectacular beaches on the island of Lanzarote. Among them, the one that gives its name to the group of them, Papagayo beach. To access this and other beaches within the natural space, it is necessary to follow a dirt and unpaved road that leads to the different parking lots.
25 years ago, a fee was implemented in Papagayo to access the natural space of Los Ajaches for those who wanted to enter using a vehicle. Since then, visitors not resident in Lanzarote must face a fee of three euros per vehicle to spend the day in the natural park.
However, access is not always charged to visitors, as La Voz has learned, on up to three different occasions during the summer, around 11:00 in the morning, tourists have not been charged access, despite having staff in the taro area.
"It is usually charged. Very early in the morning and late, no", they defend from the council. However, there are peak hours and even entire days in which non-residents have not been charged "due to some staff absence." Currently, only three workers take turns controlling the entrance to Los Ajaches, which makes it difficult for employees to check each vehicle that enters.
