Unemployment fell in the Canary Islands by 2,061 people in July, which confirms the recovery trend that began the previous month. The decrease represents 0.83 percent, which was more pronounced in the province of Las Palmas (1.26 percent and 1,727 fewer unemployed) than in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (0.30 percent and 334 fewer unemployed). The Archipelago has 246,264 unemployed workers.
Las Palmas currently has 134,939 unemployed compared to 111,325 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, according to data released this Friday by the State Public Employment Service.
The decrease in unemployment registered in the Canary Islands even improves the national average, -0.58 percent, which represented a total of 20,794 fewer unemployed in July than the previous month. In total, Spain has 3,544,095 unemployed.
The figures, however, are still very far from the situation a year ago. In July 2008, the Canary Islands had 70,163 fewer unemployed, which this month represents a 39.84 percent increase compared to 12 months ago. In Spain, that absolute figure stands at 1,117,179 more unemployed now than then, 46.03 percent higher.
