The Lanzarote native Manuela Armas will become Minister of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands next Monday. This was announced this Friday by the president, Ángel Víctor Torres, during an appearance to report on the agreements adopted by the Governing Council.
In addition, Torres has also confirmed that Blas Trujillo will be the new Minister of Health, as had been suggested for days. "They are two people with experience in management and with a track record in difficult and complex times in the archipelago," the president stressed.
In the case of Manuela Armas, he highlighted her "long political and public management career." In addition to holding positions in the Government of the Canary Islands as Deputy Minister in past terms, Manuela Armas has been president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and regional parliamentarian for the Socialist Party. Furthermore, more than two decades ago she was mayor of Arrecife, then for Coalición Canaria.
Now, she will assume the Ministry of Education replacing José Antonio Valbuena, who is Minister of Ecological Transition, Fight Against Climate Change and Territorial Planning, and assumed this other position provisionally on May 25, after the resignation of María José Guerra, who was being harshly questioned from various educational sectors.
As for the Ministry of Health, Julio Cruz was currently in charge of the department, also on an interim basis. In his case, he replaced Teresa Oval, after her dismissal shortly after the start of the health crisis due to Covid-19, and from Monday the socialist Blas Trujillo will take over the area.
