The Tías City Council approved this Tuesday in plenary to recover the Tax on Constructions, Installations and Works (ICIO), although with conditions, so that "those who carry out small works are not harmed".

As explained by the Consistory, Tías was the only municipality on the island that, until now, had not implemented this tax and this has meant an estimated loss for the municipal coffers of "about two million euros", given that "the taxes for the execution of several large-scale works in the municipality were not collected".

“We are clear that taxes have to be fair and we cannot harm those who have less. People who want to build a first home will have a 95% bonus on this tax, but large projects will have to pay what corresponds to them,” said the mayor.

“We must attend to those who need it most, but we also have to finance the municipal coffers to be able to provide services to the entire community. One of the essential instruments for the City Council to receive money and be able to invest it in its neighbors is taxes. We know that large businessmen want to invest in an environment where we all live well, where we all have an acceptable standard of living, and that is why they have to collaborate by paying a tax that is already paid in the other municipalities,” he added.

The Councilor for Finance of Tías, Tomás Silvera

The government group of the Tías City Council, formed by PSOE, Lanzarote Avanza (LAVA) and Lanzarote en Pie-Sí Podemos, agreed to approve the fiscal ordinance that regulates and establishes the ICIO, placing the construction tax at 2.4%, one of the lowest rates charged in Lanzarote, according to the Consistory.

The Councilor for Finance, Tomás Silvera, indicated that the ordinance includes a series of bonuses of 95, 90 or 50 percent depending on the constructions, installations or works that are carried out, such as the incorporation of systems for the thermal or electrical use of solar energy or constructions that favor access and habitability conditions for the disabled, among others.

Agreement with Sitcan

Other points were also approved in the plenary session, such as the agreement of collaboration for the coordinated development of the Territorial Information System of the Canary Islands (Sitcan) 2021/2024 for the municipality of Tías, an agreement that will facilitate the work of the technical office of the City Council through the Grafcan tools.

Another of the ratified points was the presentation of accounts of the Management Audit of the year 2019 of the Tías City Council, a necessary procedure for the Canarian Government to transfer the rest of the financing fund for local corporations.
