The Teguise City Council will appear in Algol's appeal against the General Plan

The Teguise City Council will appear as an interested party in the appeal that Algol Desarrollo Inmobiliario S.L. has filed against the new General Plan of the municipality. This was confirmed this Wednesday by Miguel Ángel Jiménez, councilor responsible for the Technical Office of the Consistory, after learning of the appeal before the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands presented by the real estate developer, one of the largest landowners in Costa Teguise and which is in bankruptcy proceedings for not being able to meet its debts since 2013.

Jiménez has assured that they will appear "to find out what Algol is suing" the City Council for. "Afterwards, we will take it into consideration," he said in an interview on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero. The Official Gazette of the Canary Islands published this Tuesday the announcement of the General Directorate of Territorial Planning agreeing that the Cotmac send the complete file of the Plan to the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands, as the court had requested. In addition, the publication indicated that interested parties have a period of 9 days to appear in the procedure, as is the case of the Teguise City Council.

According to the newspaper La Provincia this Wednesday, Algol considers that the new ordinance, which came into force last March, seriously harms the interests of the company. In statements to that newspaper, the head of the company in Lanzarote, Jesús Medina, stated that this damage occurs by "considerably removing buildability from the rights that we had acquired prior to the final approval of the General Plan." Thus, he indicated that Algol Desarrollo Inmobiliario S.L. has requested through its appeal the "annulment" of the document or that "the part" that harms them be modified.

For his part, Jiménez has stated that he learned of this appeal "through the press" and is "concerned" about it. According to his statements, the City Council would not know the details of Algol's challenge. However, the head of the Technical Office of Teguise has placed special emphasis on the "legal certainty" that he considers the new planning grants to the municipality. "We hope that we can solve this problem and that it does not represent a setback for the General Plan, because it is fundamental for this municipality, the residents and future investors. The Plan must have one hundred percent legal certainty," he pointed out.
