The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the areas of Crafts and Culture, has presented the poster announcing the 36th Lanzarote Crafts Fair, one of the most outstanding events on the cultural and commercial calendar of the Canary Islands. The work focuses its inspiration on the traditional soletas, popular footwear that has accompanied the daily life of the island's population for generations.
The presentation ceremony, held at the headquarters of the Island Corporation, was attended by the Councilor for Crafts, Aroa Revelo; the Councilor for Culture, Jesús Machín Tavío; and the President of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort.
As in previous editions, the Fair's poster has been dedicated to an element of the rich ethnographic heritage of Lanzarote and La Graciosa. This year, the spotlight is on the soletas, humble and resistant footwear, made with rubber and other easily accessible materials, which marked the lives of many families. Beyond its practical function, it constitutes a symbol of ingenuity, resilience and collective memory of the islands.
The Councilor for Crafts, Aroa Revelo, has stressed that "this poster pays tribute to a simple element but loaded with collective memory, which reflects the essence of crafts as a resource to respond to daily needs."
For his part, the Councilor for Culture, Jesús Machín Tavío, remarked that "the Fair is not only a commercial meeting space, but also a living showcase of the cultural heritage that defines us and that we must transmit to new generations."
The President of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, stressed that "with each edition, the Cabildo reaffirms its commitment to artisans and to the defense of an identity that distinguishes us inside and outside the Canary Islands."
The 36th Lanzarote Crafts Fair will open its doors in Mancha Blanca (Tinajo) on Wednesday, September 10 and can be visited until Monday the 15th, at 9:30 p.m. Full details of the program will be presented next week.
