The plenary session of the Senate has given the green light to the Organic Law Proposal of the Canarian Coalition (CC) on measures to combat illegal immigration and opens the door to the study of legal reforms proposed by the Canarian nationalists to tackle irregular flows.

The Upper House has taken into consideration the legislative initiative defended by the CC spokesperson, Alfredo Belda Quintana, thanks to the support of the Popular Party, Convergencia i Unió, the Basque Nationalist Party and the Aragonese Party (PAR), and will now be sent to the Congress of Deputies for in-depth debate on the measures proposed by the Canarian Coalition. The vote resulted in 106 votes in favor of the CC initiative and 96 against.

According to the Canarian nationalists, "the Senate's support for the legislative initiative is a major setback for the State Government, which, until now, has always refused to debate the legal proposals put forward by CC to try to tackle and mitigate the effects of the migratory phenomenon." The CC spokesperson extended a hand to the PSOE and offered "receptiveness to the amendments that may be proposed during the parliamentary process, that is, we offer consensus," Alfredo Belda added in his turn to reply.

The Canarian nationalists' bill advocates for the modification of the Organic Law of the Judiciary, the so-called Immigration Law and the Basic Law of Local Regime "and a series of measures to adapt the regulatory framework to the problems and needs that the exponential increase in migratory flows has revealed and, on the other hand, to order and rationalize them, redirecting them to the scope of legality."
