The residents of La Restinga who wish to do so will be able to return to their homes this Friday. This has been decided by the steering committee of the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (PEVOLCA), which met on Thursday afternoon in Valverde.
The information provided by the scientists refers to "a gradual decrease in seismicity and tremor since the eruption began and a stabilized deformation." In any case, new activity is not ruled out, so a permanent surveillance system will be established in the town, with two buses for a possible evacuation of the residents if necessary, the transfer of schoolchildren to El Pinar, and the permanence of bedridden or mobility-impaired people in the current accommodations.
According to the Canary Islands Government, "the scientific surveillance system guarantees the possibility of detecting any reactivation of the system thanks to the instrumentation that has been installed on the Island and that has been progressively placed during the evolution of the phenomenon."
Given this situation, the PEVOLCA management has decided to maintain the red traffic light, level 1, given that the eruption persists, but without risk to the population.
Do not consume fish
It should be noted that the General Directorate of Public Health of the Canary Islands Government has recommended not to consume fish or bathe in the areas affected by the stain and will maintain the air quality control unit in La Restinga.
Likewise, the maritime and aerial exclusion over the area is maintained, except for emergency vessels.
Another important decision that has been taken at this Thursday's meeting is the opening of the Los Roquillos tunnel for all users, during daytime hours, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and with the security measures established last Monday.
In addition, this Friday a commission formed by technicians from the Cabildo, the Canary Islands Government and the IGME (Geological and Mining Institute of Spain) will meet to assess the condition of the homes and decide on the possible return home of the residents of Frontera who continue to be displaced.
