The PSOE of Lanzarote has denounced that Oswaldo Betancort "uses permanent and pathological lies when it comes to facing the uncontrolled increase of vacation homes on the island." According to the data provided by the socialists, there are 9264 more properties dedicated to tourist rentals since the nationalist became president.
"The increase has reached 78.22% in recent years, which evidences an alarming housing crisis," the party added in a statement.
María Dolores Corujo, island secretary of the PSOE and Deputy in Congress, has pointed out that Betancort has refused to implement a moratorium on vacation homes, thus contributing to a collapse of the market that has expelled numerous working families from their homes. "Families spend up to 70% of their salary on rent, which makes this situation unsustainable and unfair," Corujo stated.
Corujo has emphasized that the current situation is causing an exodus of young people and professionals who are seeking a stable future on the island. "We cannot allow our people to be stripped of their roots. Lanzarote must prioritize the well-being of its inhabitants over the immediate benefit of tourism. Stop now, you are destroying the island," she indicated.
María Dolores Corujo has demanded that Oswaldo Betancort be forceful "to address the growing and unsustainable housing crisis and urgently regulate the increase in vacation homes. It is essential to find an approach that protects both residents and the tourism sector, ensuring that housing is an accessible right for all, not a luxury for a few," Corujo concluded.
