The councilors of the Popular Party in the Yaiza City Council, Juan Monzón and Guayo Rodríguez, have submitted to the plenary session a motion for the southern council to cede public land to the Government of the Canary Islands with the aim of building public housing in the municipality.

"It is well known that the lack of rental housing that exists in the municipality and on the island of Lanzarote in general is becoming a serious problem, resulting in it being very difficult to find housing for residents who already live in the municipality or for people who arrive because they manage to find a job and are faced with the handicap of housing," the popular councilors point out.

"If this is already a problem at present, we cannot lose sight of the fact that Yaiza's own General Territorial Planning Plan contemplates the expansion of the municipality's tourist offer with several new hotel complexes, some of which are already underway today," they add from the PP, from where they point out that "it is obvious, therefore, that the increase in the labor supply due to the development of the tourism industry will further exacerbate the problem of housing shortage."

Joining forces

The leader of the popular ones, Juan Monzón, considers that "as a local administration, municipal land must be put at the service of the government of the Autonomous Community where it can project the construction of official protection housing, both for acquisition and for rent."

In this regard, he recalls that, recently, the Island Council approved in plenary session the creation of the Island Housing Institute, in order to coordinate actions in housing matters between the different administrations "So we understand that it is an body with which the Yaiza City Council must actively cooperate," he says.

Likewise, the PP points out that, "during the last election campaign, the majority of the political parties represented in the council opted in their electoral programs for the transfer of land in order to contribute and facilitate the construction of public housing in the municipality"-

"So we believe that we are facing a unique opportunity to join forces in favor of the benefit and well-being of our neighbors. It is time to carry out the necessary procedures so that, when the autonomous government has the Canary Housing Plan operational, Yaiza is positioned in a preferential place and is one of the first municipalities in the archipelago to benefit from said plan," concludes Juan Monzón.
