This Wednesday, the mayor of Arrceife, Yonathan de León, and the Minister of Education, Poli Suárez, held a working meeting at the Arrecife City Council in which the removal of 'the shacks' from the Los Geranios school was confirmed. The meeting was also attended by: the Councilor for Culture and Education, Abigaíl González, and the Councilor for Sports, Juanjo López.
The mayor had told the Canarian councilor the need to "work to achieve the removal of the modular classrooms, popularly known as 'shacks' in the educational community", which still exist in educational centers in Arrecife.
After this meeting at the municipal headquarters, Poli Suárez and Yonathan de León moved to the Altavista and Tinasoria neighborhood to learn about the situation of the Los Geranios School, an infant and primary school, where several groups of students still receive their education in modular classrooms, the so-called shacks.
The mayor recalled that, in the previous term, and with a socialist Administration both in the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands and in the Island Council, it had been announced "the end of the shacks in Lanzarote", and the reality is that in this 2023 "they still exist in schools" in the capital of Lanzarote.
After this meeting, where the situation of schools in the city, the new educational and sports infrastructures were discussed, Poli Suárez has confirmed to the mayor that "his Ministry is going to work on the expansion of classrooms in the Los Geranios school."
"The Ministry is going to work on the expansion of classrooms in the Los Geranios school"
Poli Suárez stated that "I have had the opportunity to know and see the need, first-hand, with the visit to the mayor of Arrecife, of the needs and situation of the Los Geranios school." From the Ministry, "we are going to put all the meat on the grill to eliminate all the modular classrooms, the ones known as shacks, from the educational centers of the Canary Islands. We are working to eliminate these modular classrooms so that the centers meet decent conditions for children, and young people," he adds.
Yonathan de León valued "positively" this official visit and thanked "the predisposition and agility" with which the councilor has responded to this municipal demand that the Educational Community had been "demanding for some time".
