Mercadona has had to ask the Canary Islands Government for a commercial license to install and open a large establishment in Valterra, in Arrecife. The City Council has invalidated the license that it granted to this facility, after Mercadona decided to modify its project and expand the surface area. The company is still planning to open in 2014.

The City Council granted this municipal license at the end of May for a surface area of approximately 1,500 square meters in Valterra. However, Mercadona later decided that it wanted to occupy a larger area, specifically 1,995.29 square meters.

Given this modification, the Arrecife City Council has explained that Mercadona must process the license with the Canary Islands Government under the Canary Islands Commerce Law. "The company has to process it with the Canary Islands Government," they have stated from the capital's Consistory, since a city council cannot grant a commercial license if it exceeds the surface area of 1,650 square meters.

Therefore, works have not been able to start yet on the site where Mercadona will be located in Valterra, since the municipal license has been "invalidated" by modifying the project. Mercadona has explained to La Voz that this license "is in process" in the Canary Islands Government and although there is no specific opening date, it does intend to be open in 2014. Furthermore, the company has denied that they are having "problems" to settle in Arrecife.

Mercadona in Argana Alta

In the case of the surface area that Mercadona wants to open in Argana Alta, the procedures have been carried out directly with the Canary Islands Government, as the surface area that was intended to be built from the beginning exceeds 1,650 square meters. Specifically, Mercadona plans to open an establishment with a usable area of 2,111.87 square meters. The company also intends to have it open in 2014, although they do not yet have a license.

In this case, it was on August 7 when the General Directorate of Commerce and Consumption of the Canary Islands Government published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands the application for a commercial license by this company to install a large commercial establishment on Tenderete Street.

The plot of land in Argana where Mercadona intends to settle has required the development of a urban planning instrument, the Action Unit Number 12, which was definitively approved at the end of July by the Canary Islands Government. This allows the urbanization of an area where the Argana Centro has been located for years.
