The Minister of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Antonio Valbuena, visited the facilities of the Timanfaya National Park this Friday together with its director, Pascual Gil, and the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, with the aim of learning about its current state and reviewing the main actions planned for this year, which will amount to 2,253,919.41 euros.

During the visit, José Antonio Valbuena highlighted the work that the regional Executive is carrying out to provide the National Parks of the islands with facilities in accordance with their importance and announced that this year the drafting of the new Master Plan for Use and Management of the Park is scheduled to begin.

“In the Canary Islands we are fortunate to have four of the fifteen national parks in Spain and our responsibility is to provide them with the best possible facilities to facilitate their conservation and maintain their attractiveness for visitors,” said the minister.

For her part, María Dolores Corujo indicated that “the Timanfaya National Park is a clear example of sustainable use of natural resources.” “The Montañas del Fuego are the most visited facilities in the network of Tourist Centers of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, thanks to a model of use that allows a high level of visitors in a way that is compatible with its conservation,” she said.

In this sense, she detailed that the main items contemplated for 2021 in the Timanfaya National Park are those destined for its surveillance and public use and for conservation, cleaning and maintenance actions. These are joined by other investments such as that aimed at the acquisition of electric vehicles and the installation of the corresponding charging points, or that necessary for the management of the Park's archive and documentation.

At the same time, the Canary Islands Government's investment plan in Timanfaya also includes actions such as the installation of a pedestrian walkway in the visitor center, or the supply of flow meters to control the flow of people and the analysis of an ICT application for the management and control of public use or the preparation of a mobile coverage map.

“Our national parks also offer us great opportunities to expand knowledge about the rich biodiversity of the Canary Islands and learn how to conserve it. That is why there are also several items dedicated to carrying out studies and disseminating them through technical-scientific dissemination conferences,” Valbuena pointed out.
