The Arrecife City Council has put out to public tender the contract for the demolition of the Rocar warehouses on the Islote del Francés. The City Council itself decreed its imminent ruin and demolition in November 2007.

The demolition will cost 773,870 euros and the competing companies must be registered as companies with asbestos risk, since the warehouses of this old fish cannery contain this material. The demolition work will last eight months.

La Rocar was abandoned in the 80s. Since then, part of the site, in the middle of the Arrecife marina, of almost 80,000 square meters, has been used as a parking lot and as a home for the homeless. The place has suffered several fires.

In November 2007, the City Council decreed its imminent ruin and the demolition of the warehouses. The homeless were evicted and the entrances were closed. The land, classified as a general system, belongs to Inversiones Islote del Francés, which intends to either urbanize the area, or have it expropriated or compensated with other land.

In February 2009, a year after the eviction, the first cleaning work began. The Heritage service of the Cabildo de Lanzarote ordered its stoppage because it was within the area of influence of the Cultural Interest Asset of the Charco de San Ginés.

Heritage

The Heritage report orders to respect three stone buildings associated with the salt flats that remain in this area until their historical or cultural interest is determined. In February of this year, the Cabildo finally authorized the demolition.

The City Council has a judicial authorization to demolish the warehouses and intends to charge the demolition to the owner company, although at first it will take care of the expense.
