The Cabildo of Lanzarote has stated that it is not aware of the criminal complaint filed by the Las Palmas Environment Prosecutor's Office or the official report, allegedly sent on March 18, 2010 by the General Directorate of Public Health, requesting the closure of the Zonzamas Environmental Complex, regarding the information published this Saturday in 'Canarias7'.
It also explains that they have no notification of the report that, according to the published news, has been sent by the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) about the risks that the possible contamination of the soil and groundwater may have for public health. Risks that, according to the information, may lead to respiratory problems or cancer.
The Island Corporation states in a statement that the current situation of the Zonzamas Environmental Complex is of "absolute normality since all the required authorizations have been processed."
It adds that, after the reforms, investments and modifications made during the last 18 months, they are in a position to be approved, "as it appears from the admission to processing and evaluation by the Government of the Canary Islands -on May 6- of the environmental impact study of the project for the execution of new landfill cells", the last step for the integrated environmental authorization of the Zonzamas Environmental Complex, and a resolution and notification must be issued in this regard within three months.
The Cabildo insists that the situation presented by the published information "is not at all a reflection of the reality of the Zonzamas Environmental Complex, nor similar to that of other landfills reported in the newspaper itself."
The Cabildo of Lanzarote concludes that, once it has in its possession the content of the complaint and the aforementioned reports, it will pronounce and offer a press conference to "accredit and clarify with documentation everything stated".
