The Cabildo has received the revalidation certificate of Lanzarote as a UNESCO World Geopark, which is awarded every four years. For its revalidation, the development of geotourism, the conservation of the natural environment and collaboration between members of the network are especially valued.
For the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and head of Geoparque Lanzarote and Archipiélago Chinijo, María Dolores Corujo, “this recognition does not mean that we have reached a goal, on the contrary, it serves as a starting point for a new period in which we will have to be able not only to maintain the state of conservation of our landscape, but also to improve its protection.”
The Cabildo of Lanzarote received the “green” status following the recommendation of the fourth meeting of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, held in September 2019.
UNESCO Global Geoparks are spaces with geographical continuity where sites and landscapes of international geological relevance are managed according to a concept of protection, education and sustainable socioeconomic development. UNESCO Global Geoparks explore, develop and celebrate the links between their geological, natural and cultural heritage.
