The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, together with the Minister of Social Welfare, Marci Acuña, and the Minister for the Elderly, Nori Machín, have received and congratulated the winners from Lanzarote and La Graciosa in the Solidarity with the Elderly Awards, organized by the General Directorate for the Elderly and Active Participation of the Government of the Canary Islands, coordinated by Verónica Meseguer, who also wanted to personally convey her congratulations.
The winners from the island of Lanzarote and La Graciosa attended the reception at the Cabildo: Manuel Ruiz, as president of AFA (Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's and Other Dementias), for his outstanding work in supporting the elderly with Alzheimer's and their families; Severiano García, member of Asomavo, for his dedication to volunteering and his commitment to the well-being of the elderly; and Guillermo José Felez Gacía, nurse from La Graciosa, recognized for his dedication and care towards the elderly population of the island.
Oswaldo Betancort expressed his gratitude and pride: "Lanzarote and La Graciosa have people and groups who, with their effort and dedication, teach us the true meaning of solidarity. These awards are a well-deserved tribute to their work, which directly impacts the lives of our elders and the social fabric of our islands."
Betancort also highlighted "the importance of continuing to promote public policies that strengthen the well-being of the elderly, recalling the Cabildo's commitment to this population." "Their work is an example for all, and from this Institution we will continue working to ensure that our elders receive the recognition, attention and respect they deserve."
The general director of the Elderly and Active Participation, Verónica Meseguer, highlighted the recovery of these awards as an opportunity to make solidarity visible and promote a more respectful and supportive society: "Recognizing those who work tirelessly for our elders is essential to build a more humane and cohesive community."
"From the Social Welfare Area, congratulate those recognized and thank them for their work because for Lanzarote it is a benchmark, guide and a replicable example in the rest of the islands, and without a doubt, an incentive to continue in the same line," said Marci as Minister of the area.
The legacy of Living Memories
In addition to the awards, the gala honored the 56 senior participants in the Living Memories project, an initiative that has collected, in audiovisual format, the life stories of senior citizens from the islands, preserving their cultural legacy.
Nori Machín, Minister for the Elderly, highlighted that this proposal is "a bridge between generations that not only preserves our cultural wealth, but also gives voice and prominence to our elders, empowering them as transmitters of knowledge and values."
