The Cabildo of Lanzarote has strongly rejected the statements made by the spokesperson of the Socialist Group, Ariagona González, regarding the alleged lack of attention to homeless people during the recent heatwave that affected the island.
The Councilor for Social Welfare and Inclusion, Marci Acuña, has clarified that, “far from what the PSOE claims, the Cabildo activated, through the Area of Social Welfare and the Consortium of Security and Emergencies, an action protocol to guarantee the safety and well-being of the most vulnerable people, especially those on the street during the past days of extreme heat.”
In collaboration with the social entities Mararía, Flora Acoge and Emerlan, "all the reception resources enabled on the island, including the supervised flats, the two shelters and the soup kitchen" were kept open, also reinforcing hydration and air conditioning measures. In this sense, the councilor stressed that “every time a warning for extreme heat is activated, we mobilize to provide coverage and protection, although in many cases people do not come or decide not to stay in the enabled resources. But our obligation, and we fulfill it, is to be prepared for them.”
Acuña regretted that “the Socialist Party is once again resorting to lies and defamation in a matter as sensitive as this” and recalled that, during the last legislature, under a socialist government in the Cabildo, “the Flora Acoge accommodation resource for homeless people remained open only a few hours a day, while now, thanks to this new group of Government, it is operational 24 hours a day.”
