The Cabildo and several town councils form a consortium to safeguard the landscape of La Geria

The Cabildo and the town councils of Yaiza, Tinajo, Tías, San Bartolomé and Teguise signed this morning at the Farmer's Monument the constitution of the Consortium of La Geria, to protect its landscape.

The Consortium will try to "protect the unique landscape of La Geria, preserve the traditional cultivation of the vine and wine activity, as well as promote tourism activity in the area, under criteria of sustainability and environmental, that help to obtain income with which to maintain this protected landscape", indicates the Cabildo.

The agreement between the institutions will result in a protection work that will be carried out by joining efforts between each of those involved. With the creation of this Consortium, Lanzarote is ahead of the definitive approval of the Special Plan of La Geria, which must be signed by the Government of the Canary Islands.

Once this plan and its management consortium are approved, this newly created consortium will be attached to that other one, which will also include the Government of the Canary Islands.

Wine tourism

The Consortium will launch a wine tourism project for La Geria, for which there is already funding of 3.8 million euros, obtained through a loan granted by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade.

The aim is to find an economic activity that respects the environment, generates income and with that income helps to finance the work of maintaining the landscape carried out by the winegrowers.

All this can be carried out through the credit of the Fund for the modernization of tourism infrastructures to which the municipalities of Yaiza, Tinajo and San Bartolomé initially joined, and to which the municipalities of Tías and Teguise will now join. The Cabildo will contribute an amount for the operation of the Consortium and the wine tourism plan. The amounts are distributed in proportion to the territory of each municipality in the space of La Geria.
