The Cabildo of Lanzarote has put out to tender, for 449,738 euros, the works to pedestrianize and convert Hermanos Zerolo street in Arrecife into an open commercial area. According to the announcement published in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP), interested companies have 26 calendar days, starting from this Thursday, to submit their offers. The works, co-financed with FEDER funds, will have an execution period of five months once they are awarded.
The project points out that Hermanos Zerolo street in Arrecife is one of the roads in the capital "where the level of deterioration of the commercial area is greater" with "old, obsolete, low-quality shops, etc.". A street that is characterized "by the mixture of traffic and pedestrian flows, the latter being of narrow width without any furniture or vegetation." "The shortcomings of the street do not promote the commercial activity that is proper to it, nor does it invite pedestrians to stay," it is noted.
The action planned by the Master Plan consists of an action aimed at revitalizing the area, in order to recover, maintain and promote traditional shopping centers, proposing a revitalization of the area in question in various areas: commercial, leisure, restaurants, etc.
It is proposed to reduce the speed on the streets that cross it
Specifically, the objective is to "enhance pedestrian mobility" of the street "with the intention of reactivating the commercial area." To this end, it is proposed to create public spaces, as well as the placement of street furniture and trees. In this way, it is pointed out that "a public open space perceived as a pedestrian continuum" will be achieved.
Thus, the street will be pedestrianized, and vehicles will only be able to circulate on the roads that cross it, such as Francos, Cienfuegos and Laguna. "Given that the intention is to limit road traffic but without causing significant damage to the mobility of traffic in the Center, the project seeks to give priority to pedestrians at the points of intersection with the roads. To this end, it is proposed to reduce the speed of traffic by means of signage and to slightly raise Hermanos Zerolo street), making it above the level of the street with vehicle traffic at the pedestrian crossing points," the project states, where it is also pointed out that in order for the open commercial area to function correctly, the location of loading and unloading areas is guaranteed.
