The great family of the Guanapay folklore group celebrated the XVI edition of the "Coplas Contest and Guanapay Festival" last Friday, May 7. The event took place in the Santo Domingo convent of La Villa de Teguise at 9:30 p.m., when this event began, dedicated on this occasion to the emigrant sailor.

Thus, the first notes that were heard were some folías sung by two members of the group, while a poem was heard. Immediately afterwards, the musical group "Jara y Tomillo" took the stage, arriving from Cáceres (Extremadura). These 22 members delighted the public with a varied musical repertoire and received numerous applause.

After that, it was time to receive a parranda formed by several musicians belonging to different folklore groups and directed by Professor Clotildo Martín. Seven young soloists performed a varied repertoire of traditional Canarian music, which moved the audience so much that they even interrupted on more than one occasion with applause.

During that night, the cultural work of Nieves Castillo was also recognized, a woman committed to different cultural facets in La Villa de Teguise. Nieves received several gifts from different groups in Teguise.

The winner of this edition of the coplas contest also took the stage, a prize that went to Jorge Prada, who recited one of the winning coplas before the event ended.

The group organizing the event, A.F. Guanapay, performed a varied traditional Canarian repertoire, putting an end to the event with a lively isa parrandera. Thus, the public left their seats to finish the event dancing.
