A group of people, belonging to three associations, met on Saturday morning in the bus parking area of Lanzarote airport to read a manifesto coinciding with the 34th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
The event was convened by the Sahrawi community of Lanzarote, the association of families supporting the Sahrawi people and the newly created Activismo Haidar association, which arose among some of the members of the support platform for the human rights activist.
The presence of the actor Willy Toledo was planned but he could not travel to Lanzarote due to health problems. The manifesto was read by Federico Monsalve, a member of the platform, who recalled that the Sahara is the only territory in Africa that has not gone through a decolonization process and that Spain is responsible for this.
He asked the Spanish Government to speak out against the Madrid agreements of 1975, to comply with the law and to stand as the administering power of the territory of the Sahara. "Spain has been committing crimes and manipulating the situation for 35 years," he said, and asked Spanish society to look at Portugal's example with East Timor.
The associations asked Spanish society not to stop denouncing the abuses against the citizens of the Sahara in Morocco. He also cited a series of companies that do business "at the cost of Sahrawi blood" and that are "necessary collaborators" of Morocco.
Haidar's Return
Finally, the sub-delegate of the Polisario Front in the Canary Islands, Mohammed Said, recalled the history of the Sahrawi people since 1975. He pointed out that the event at the Lanzarote airport has a special connotation and that Aminatu Haidar's intention is to return to the Island soon to thank them for the welcome during her hunger strike.
The associations have organized several activities during today in a tent located in the Ramírez Cerdá park in Arrecife, there will be a round table, exhibitions and a tasting of typical Saharan dishes.
