The president of the regional government, Paulino Rivero, said this Thursday in Madrid that the announcement of a strike by Aena workers during Holy Week "has already hurt us" and reiterated that the Spanish Government must adopt "the exceptional measures that are necessary, including the most extreme" if there is no understanding with the unions.

According to Rivero, if said agreement is not reached, measures could be adopted ranging "from one hundred percent of the minimum services to other issues that we will raise" if the central Executive does not act "in a timely manner." In this sense, he said that the regional Executive could adopt a formal agreement at tomorrow's Government Council.

"If there is no agreement, we will adopt a formal agreement to demand from the Spanish Government exceptional measures that guarantee the full operability of the Canary Islands airports," Rivero said after meeting today in Madrid with the president of the Bankia Group, Rodrigo Rato.

Rivero insisted that the Canary Islands tourism sector has the most to lose in Spain as a whole if the strike takes place and that the mere fact that the strike has been announced generates "uncertainty" in potential travelers to the Islands.

"The sooner the doubts that there will be no alterations in the airports are cleared, the better, because it will be to convey confidence to the operators and families," he said after pointing out that in the telephone conversation he had this Thursday with the Minister of Development, José Blanco, he was "hopeful" regarding the possibility of an understanding.
