The mayor of the Arrecife City Council, Cándido Reguera, has assured that the Consistory will try to reach an agreement with Urbaser, in charge of cleaning, maintaining gardens and collecting waste in the capital, to avoid the indefinite strike that has been called for next April 18.

The reason for this strike, which in principle only the workers who are in charge of collecting waste and belongings in the capital have decided to join, is due to the breach of the pre-agreement of the collective agreement signed in December 2009, as explained this Monday by the Urbaser Company Committee. From Intersindical Canaria they affirm that the company "did not apply the increase of the real Canary Islands CPI, of 2 percent to the salaries of 2010, as well as the salary review of 2.5 percent for the salaries of 2011".

The workers' claim is linked to that of the company itself, since, apparently, the labor agreement links the salary increases of the workers to the revision of the price that the City Council pays Urbaser for the services it provides in the capital.

In this sense, Reguera has announced that next Thursday he will meet with the heads of Urbaser, as well as with the Company Committee, to look for solutions that put a stop to the strike.

The mayor has acknowledged that "it is true" that the labor agreement that the Urbaser workers have is linked to the price review of 2008, foreseen in the contract between the company and the Arrecife City Council. A review that Reguera considers that "must be carried out". "It is an issue that will have to be resolved sooner or later, but no one hides the situation that has been generated in Urbaser and we will have to carry that out with all the guarantees", affirms the first mayor.

Currently, Urbaser receives about 700,000 euros per month from the Arrecife Consistory, and both the former manager of the company in Lanzarote and other Urbaser executives in Madrid were arrested and charged in the framework of the "Unión" case. The investigation considers that they are all related to the alleged payment of illegal commissions during the past legislature, supposedly related to this contract.
