Óscar Noda proposes to replace the median of the LZ-20 to recover the natural flow of the jable

The counselor of the Mixed Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote urges to study a technical alternative that allows the transit of the jable between Arrecife and San Bartolomé, warning about the environmental impact of the infrastructures in this ecosystem

The counselor of the Mixed Group in the Island Council of Lanzarote, Óscar Noda, has presented a motion for the next island council plenary session in which he requests to “study the technical possibility of replacing the existing median on the LZ-20 road from Arrecife to San Bartolomé with another that allows the normal transit of the jable passage and that, once these studies are available, the replacement of the median is projected and the intervention is tendered to allow the passage of the jable.”

Noda's proposal, based on the “fragility of the Jable passage increased in recent years” and on the fact that “any non-natural modification can cause significant changes in the mobility of the sands and affect not only the landscape, but also the fauna and flora that depend on it”, understands that “the existence of natural spaces, such as beaches and dunes, is threatened by human activity, especially road and infrastructure projects, which can destabilize this sensitive environment.”

“The jable in Lanzarote”, continues Counselor Noda, “is a large area of organic sand, from north to south, that extends from Famara beach to Playa Honda, occupying parts of the municipalities of Teguise, San Bartolomé, Tinajo and Arrecife” and that, in addition, “the flow of jable” usually moves “by the wind from the northeast to the southwest in this channel or jable passage, but at present it is partially obstructed due to the buildings that have been built and, in particular, the median of the LZ-20 and the industrial area of Argana Alta.”

For Óscar Noda “all these buildings are a barrier that prevents the jable from moving naturally from its primary flow to other areas, such as El Cable, La Concha, Playa Honda or Guacimeta” and, “although the Cabildo of Lanzarote does not have competences in relation to urban planning, in relation to existing private buildings”, it is “true that, in relation to the LZ-20, it can eliminate the median that delimits both lanes, as it is a barrier that prevents the normal flow of the Jable.”

Noda insists that “a solution for the Jable to continue its normal course is the replacement of the median with another of less impact that allows the passage of the Jable between both roads of the road and, as an example, the type of median existing on the LZ-2 as it passes through El Cable can be used, and insists that “the preservation of the Jable is, therefore, fundamental, not only for the natural beauty of Lanzarote, but also for the conservation of its biodiversity”, concludes Counselor Óscar Noda.
