The New Canaries candidate for Mayor of Teguise, Dr. Fernando Jiménez, has pledged to "lead the implementation of a permanent Supply Market in La Villa de Teguise".
The Canarian aspirant to the City Council of the old capital of Lanzarote confirms that, "in case of having government responsibilities in the next term after the next elections on May 28, the island will finally have a Supply Market that has been so much demanded by producers and, especially, by consumers.”
"The project, which will have to be followed by a Market of insular scope for all Lanzarote, will involve the participation of the City Council of Teguise itself, the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Government of the Canary Islands, so that in proportional parts contribute to finance a real and executable project in the short term as long as there is political will,” they say from NC.
As Dr. Jiménez assures, who continues to hold weekly meetings with representatives of the primary sector of Teguise, “this alternative is a clear response to the need to eliminate intermediaries and thus reduce costs for farmers, ranchers and fishermen of the municipality and the north of Lanzarote, and of course a historical demand of consumers and users, who will be greatly benefited by the reduction of the shopping basket and by the proximity, quality and freshness of the local product.” “We would give even more output to local products such as potatoes from Los Valles, bread from Soo, sweet potatoes and cheese from Teguise, in addition to fish from La Graciosa and other corners of the Island,” says the Canarian candidate.
Once a three-way agreement has been closed for its financing between the City Council, the Cabildo and the Government of the Canary Islands, the New Canaries aspirant also advances that "the management formula with which this Market would initially operate will be based on an indirect management award that will fall on cooperatives or associations related to the primary sector, which would manage this Supply Market in itself.”
In this sense, the most suitable location for the Supply Market to become a reality, according to the opinion of experts from the primary sector and several municipal technicians already consulted, "undoubtedly passes through the vicinity of the Plaza Camilo José Cela, located in the heart of the historic center of the town of La Villa de Teguise, very close to municipal offices and that, except to host the municipal Christmas Nativity Scene, does not have any other use throughout the year. If the Plaza had any patrimonial affectation, the preservation, care and aesthetics of the place would be maintained,” warns Jiménez.
The Canarian candidate considers that “the accesses are adequate although some simple intervention would have to be done before the opening to favor the inclusion of people with reduced mobility (PMR) to the Supply Market”. “The space of the Plaza is more than enough for a dozen stalls to provide service during opening hours and the way in which concessions and access to these stalls will be promoted should be analyzed and debated with total transparency and rigor from the Institution that awards its management, that is, from the City Council itself,” says Jiménez.
The proposal of Nueva Canarias in Teguise “is real, easily executable and ambitious”. Fernando Jiménez highlights that "the first proposal is that this permanent Supply Market for La Villa opens every day from 9 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon, with the idea that it remains in operation six of the seven days of the week, so that it also contributes to generate employment and boost the local economy and the commercial sector every day, and not only on Sundays,” day in which the Market of La Villa brings together thousands of visitors.
