The general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote and congresswoman, María Dolores Corujo, has denounced the "lack of initiative" of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of Lanzarote to activate new public housing on the island, despite the housing emergency that Lanzarote is going through. "Not a single new home planned. That is the reality behind the headlines," she stated.
Corujo pointed out that the actions being presented as "new announcements" actually correspond to "a program already defined in the previous term presided over by Ángel Víctor Torres, within the Canary Islands Housing Plan 2020-2025". "The Government tries to sugarcoat reality with headlines, but the data is undeniable: the only things being executed in Lanzarote are projects inherited from the previous socialist government. There is no own planning, no new investments, and no projects that respond to the housing emergency the island is going through," she denounced.
The homes of Triana and Maneje
Corujo focused on the case of the planned housing on Triana street, in Arrecife, which in recent weeks has been presented as a sudden initiative. "Triana is not a sudden project. It is an action that is based on land ceded by the Cabildo of Lanzarote during the previous term and on planning promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands presided over by Ángel Víctor Torres," he recalled.
Along the same lines, the general secretary of the PSOE of Lanzarote stated that the second batch of public housing in the Maneje neighborhood cannot be presented as a new achievement either. "Maneje is the best example of what is happening: what was prepared is being built. What does not exist, to this day, is a new roadmap from the Clavijo Government or the Betancort Cabildo to generate public housing in Lanzarote," she criticized
Corujo recalled that the previous Canary Islands Government, under socialist presidency, planned the construction of 400 public housing units for Lanzarote within the Canary Islands Housing Plan 2020-2025, "after decades without the housing problem on our island being planned or addressed." "The result of that work is the 201 public housing units currently under construction in Maneje, but also other projects that remain pending, such as the 136 housing units with available land in Playa Blanca, the second phase of 200 housing units in the Maneje neighborhood itself, or the 46 planned for Triana street, in Arrecife, on a plot of land ceded by the Cabildo during the socialist government," he listed.
The secretary-general warned that "Lanzarote cannot afford any more empty announcements or further delays." "Those governing today cannot limit themselves to managing what they inherited and taking credit for others' achievements while thousands of families live with impossible rents or without housing alternatives. Public housing requires planning, investment, and political courage, and that is precisely what is lacking," she concluded.
