The former president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and current councilor of the PSOE in the opposition, Manuela Armas, has been appointed Deputy Minister of Education of the Canarian Executive, in the Governing Council held this Tuesday. Thus, Armas will accompany the general secretary of the Canarian socialists and current vice president of the regional government, José Miguel Pérez, in this area, who has directly assumed the Ministry of Education.
"It is an honor to be appointed and also to represent Lanzarote in the Government of the Canary Islands", said Manuela Armas after learning of her appointment. A new challenge of "great responsibility", but which Armas welcomes "with great enthusiasm".
The socialist has stressed that she is aware that "the situation of Education in the Canary Islands is complicated", but she has indicated that she will do "everything possible to improve educational levels in every way". "I have always believed that Education can be greatly improved and that is what I am going to do. I will be breaking down things as I make contact with the Ministry and with each of the problems we have right now".
Likewise, Armas has pointed out that "complicated times are running" and that "an important part of the solution to the problems is to have infrastructure and personnel to carry out their functions, and that is based on money". "But it is also very important," she added, "the will of teachers, of parents, to improve a problem as serious as this."
In this sense, Armas considers teamwork essential. "If there is any place where you have to work as a team, it has to be here, with the entire educational community, with everyone", said the new Deputy Minister of Education. "I belong to the guild, which I have great respect for, and I think we can do many things if I also find people who help me do them," she added.
In addition, Armas has stated that she will try to "be fair" and "with the few resources, prioritize the most urgent". Of course, she has already advanced some measures that, in her opinion, are necessary, such as expanding the places for Vocational Training. "The lack of places in FP is fundamental, because there are many children who have been left out," she said.
Minutes of the Cabildo
Armas has also referred to her position as councilor of the Cabildo. "I have never liked the issue of having two positions and I think there are enough people in the party to have each one the role that corresponds to them, so I will surely resign. I have not considered it yet, nor have I discussed it with my party colleagues, but I think it is what is convenient."
However, from the PSOE they have already confirmed that José Antonio Gutiérrez, number five on the list and former councilor of Tías for several terms, will take over the position of Manuela Armas in the Cabildo.
For his part, the general secretary of the socialists of Lanzarote, Carlos Espino, has expressed his satisfaction with the appointment of Manuela Armas and has stated that, in his opinion, this decision by José Miguel Pérez, "represents a recognition of the political career and the value of Armas".
