Lanzarote was ahead this Tuesday to the strike days called by the unions of education in the Canary Islands to protest against the Government's 'decree' for the recruitment of temporary and substitute teachers. The impact of the strike is estimated at between twenty percent, according to the Government, and sixty percent, according to the Trade Union of Education Workers of the Canary Islands (STEC), of the teachers affected.

The monitoring, according to the Island Education Office, has been minimal. In Lanzarote there are 1,800 teachers, between Infant, Primary and Secondary, of which 530 are temporary or substitute teachers. According to the island director, Juan Cruz, "with data certified by the directors of the centers", 121 teachers have supported the strike, including eight civil servants. The center where the strike has had the greatest impact is the IES Zonzamas in Arrecife.

For his part, Francisco Dévora, spokesman for STEC, one of the convening unions, puts the follow-up at around sixty percent of the teachers affected. He points out that Wednesday will be the day when the strike has the greatest impact. In addition, he recalls that a concentration has been called at the doors of the Cabildo at 11.00 am.

The strike was called to protest against the so-called 'decree' of the Government of the Canary Islands, despite the fact that the Executive has indicated its intention to withdraw it. This decree regulates the recruitment lists of temporary and substitute staff without respecting seniority.

On July 5, CCOO, Insucan, FETE-UGT, Anpe, USPL and SEPCA called an indefinite strike, while the strike this Tuesday is called by the Trade Union of Education Workers of the Canary Islands (STEC) and by Asamblea de Docentes (EA). Lanzarote is the first island in which this strike is called, which is planned in the rest of the Canary Islands for Thursday.
