The general director of Infrastructure and Equipment of the Government of the Canary Islands, Iván G. Carro, together with the Minister of Education of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Ascensión Toledo, held a technical meeting with management teams from different educational centers to whom they presented the model of shade areas on the island and in La Graciosa.
Regarding this meeting, Carro highlighted that the "initiative goes beyond an aesthetic or functional improvement, since it is an investment in health, education and quality of life for students on the island."
For her part, Ascensión Toledo explained that "this model is easily replicable, and we wanted the center managements to be able to learn about it firsthand, resolve doubts and adapt it to their real needs. It is about creating spaces with shade designed for coexistence, learning and climate protection."
The measure will benefit dozens of educational centers throughout the island's geography. In the municipality of Arrecife, the early childhood and primary education centers (CEIP) Capellanía del Yágabo, Nieves Toledo, Titerroy, Argana Alta, Benito Méndez Tarajano, Los Geranios, Adolfo Topham and Antonio Zerolo will participate; the secondary education institutes (IES) Agustín Espinosa, Las Salinas, César Manrique, Las Maretas, Altavista, IES Blas Cabrera Felipe and the Compulsory Education Center (CEO) Argana.
In San Bartolomé, the CEIPs Playa Honda, Ajei and Alcalde Alexis Tejera Lemes, as well as the IES San Bartolomé and Playa Honda, will be able to have these shade spaces. For its part, in the municipality of Teguise, the model will be implemented in the CEIPs Doctor Alfonso Spínola, Tao, Costa Teguise; the IES Teguise and Costa Teguise and the Special Education Center (CEE) Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes.
The centers in the south of the island will also be integrated into the project. In Yaiza, the CEIPs Playa Blanca and Yaiza, the IES Yaiza and the CEO Playa Blanca. In Tías, in the CEIP La Asomada-Mácher, as well as in the IES Tías and Puerto del Carmen. Tinajo will have the participation of the CEIP Virgen de los Volcanes and the IES Tinajo, while in Haría the CEIP San Juan and the IES Haría will be included. Finally, the CEO Ignacio Aldecoa is also joining on the island of La Graciosa.
This action is part of the plan to adapt educational centers to high temperatures, a strategy promoted by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports with the aim of mitigating the effects of climate change in school environments and improving the conditions of habitability and comfort of students, moving towards more resilient, safe and sustainable spaces.
The creation of these shade spaces in public educational centers in Lanzarote and La Graciosa has a financing of 1.5 million euros that the area led by Poli Suárez receives from the Cabildo of Lanzarote after the agreement reached last December.
