Lack of land hinders the construction of seven educational centers planned in the Southern Plan

The Minister of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, Isaac Godoy, held a meeting this morning with the mayors of the municipalities with which he works jointly "monitoring all the educational infrastructure problems on the island." The mayors conveyed the needs of their respective municipalities while reviewing the projects that are being carried out within the Southern Plan.

Within the project, Godoy stated that "the biggest problem is the allocation of land for new construction", and in fact seven works are still pending for this reason. These include the IES Haría, the expansion of La Garita, the plots for the institutes of Maneje and La Medular, the schools of Playa Honda and San Bartolomé and the IES of Playa Blanca. In addition, 14 of the planned projects have come to light to date, with five in execution and 13 in the drafting phase.

In a press conference, the Minister highlighted from the meeting "the deep defense that the town councils make of the needs of the citizens of their municipality", in addition to "the legitimate claim of the Cabildo that all the islands must have the same services that guarantee equal opportunities for all boys and girls."

The new growth and new educational demands experienced by Lanzarote have meant the planning of some improvement projects in educational centers, which include new dining rooms, covering of sports courts, accessibility to common areas, in addition to the expansion of the centers that have become obsolete in terms of the number of places they offer. An attempt to ensure that "educational centers become places of common use for all citizens and thus provide facilities to the entire citizenry", said Godoy.

Projects in progress

Among the projects that are currently being carried out are the expansion of the Colegio de la Garita and the creation of a school canteen, the creation of an institute in Costa Teguise with 16 units, improvements in the Colegio de Guatiza, the expansion of the Colegio Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes, the rehabilitation of the historic building of the IES Agustín Espinosa and the completion of the pavilion of the IES Las Salinas.

In addition, in San Bartolomé the self-supporting covered court of Playa Honda will be created, in Tías the awarding of the Macher-La Asomada school and in Yaiza the expansion of 2 units of the Playa Honda school, in addition to the expansion of the three units of the Playa Honda school.
