The Minister of Economy, Knowledge and Employment of the Canary Islands Government, Carolina Darias San Sebastián, and the director of the Labor and Social Security Inspectorate (ITSS), under the Ministry of Labor, Migrations and Social Security, Soledad Serrano Ponz, signed this Monday in Madrid a collaboration agreement to fight against undeclared work, irregular employment, fraud against social security and in matters of professional training for employment. The agreement aims, among others, to reinforce the inspection action in the Canary Islands within the framework of the Master Plan for Decent Work.

"This is to continue an initiative that had already been developed once a year in the Canary Islands, consisting of a reinforcement action by the labor inspection to expose irregular employment and undeclared work," explained the Minister.

The initiative, she detailed, is in line with "the efforts of both administrations, within the framework of the Master Plan, to recover the rights of workers." "Something to which we are compelled from the governments of the Canary Islands and Spain, which maintain close collaboration in this regard, with the involvement of economic and social agents," she added.

An agreement endowed with 160,000 euros and with 65 measures

For her part, the director of the ITSS explained that to reinforce the inspection activity in the Canary Islands, there will be around 30 inspectors and sub-inspectors, coming from other autonomous communities, who travel to the Islands specifically for this reinforcement plan. She also pointed out that the Master Plan for Decent Work includes as one of its fundamental objectives the recovery of the rights of workers and increase the sustainability of the Social Security system, a goal in which "these reinforcements to detect the underground economy and undeclared work" play a fundamental role.

The agreement, endowed with 160,000 euros, takes place within the framework of the Master Plan for Decent Work for the years 2018, 2019 and 2020, which includes a total of 65 measures focused on the fight against fraud, job insecurity and the eradication of situations of abuse, as well as fraud in the use of temporary contracts in part-time hiring, excess working hours and unpaid or uncompensated overtime.
