The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has demanded public explanations from the island's president, Oswaldo Betancort, in light of the lack of transparency regarding his academic background. The institutional website of the Cabildo indicates that the president has "law studies", but "no further information is specified, nor the years of training". An omission that is repeated in the portal of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, where the socialists denounce that "directly there is no reference to his studies".

"It is reasonable to clarify whether the president has a law degree and in which center he studied. These are basic data that should appear in the profile of any public official," said the socialist councilor Benjamín Perdomo.

"We are not talking about a private matter. We are talking about a piece of information that is part of the public curriculum of a person who holds the highest position on the island. It is a matter of respect for the institution and the citizens," added Perdomo.

The PSOE has pointed out that the information on the academic background of the president "must appear clearly and accessibly in the institutional portals, as is the case with any public office".

"This is not a minor issue. It is important to specify whether the president has a law degree or not. It is information that must be available and without ambiguities," concluded Perdomo.
