The Government of the Canary Islands has appointed José Juan Cruz Saavedra as the new director of the Institute of Statistics (ISTAC). The appointment was made official at the Government Council held this Saturday.
José Juan Cruz Saavedra is currently the spokesperson for the socialist group in the Tías city council, a position he must leave due to his recent appointment, giving way to his colleague on the list, Saray Rodríguez Suárez.
The Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) is the central body of the autonomous statistical system and the official research center of the Government of the Canary Islands, created and regulated by Law 1/1991, of January 28, on Statistics of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (CAC), which, among other things, assigns it the following functions:
Provide statistical information: One of ISTAC's objectives is to provide, with technical and professional independence, statistical information of interest to the CAC, taking into account the fragmentation of the territory and its singularities, and complying with the principles established in the European Statistics Code of Practice.
Coordinate public statistical activity: ISTAC is the body responsible for the promotion, management, and coordination of public statistical activity in the CAC, assuming the exercise of the statutory competence provided for in article 30, section 23, of the Statute of Autonomy of the Canary Islands.
