The Haría City Council commemorated, on the morning of this Wednesday, December 4, the 50th anniversary of the construction of the Santa Bárbara hermitage in Máguez. This institutional event brought together residents and local authorities in the church square.
During the day, the mayor of Haría, Alfredo Villalba, spoke; the member of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Marci Acuña; the member of the pro-construction commission of the hermitage and mayor of Haría in 1974, Juan Santana de León; the head of the pedagogical department of the César Manrique Foundation, Alfredo Díaz; the parish priest and archpriest of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Norberto Medina. The event also included the screening of a documentary video, made by Studio ERA, about the history of the church.
The mayor of Haría, Alfredo Villalba, highlighted that the hermitage is a "symbol that connects generations, reinforces collective identity and embodies the essence of our land and its people." "This anniversary invites us to reflect on our responsibility to preserve its legacy," he concluded.
The hermitage, the only religious work by César Manrique, stands as a testimony to the cultural and artistic heritage of Lanzarote, reflecting the idiosyncrasy of the town of Máguez and the vision of the artist from Lanzarote.
The event concluded with a musical performance by the trio formed by Adrián Niz, José Vicente Pérez and Almudena Hernández, putting the finishing touch to a celebration that honored the past and projected the municipality's commitment to the future.
