Comisiones Obreras de Canarias denounced yesterday that the preventive measures to fight against the high temperatures that are registered in the greenhouses are not being fulfilled, so the workers are subjected to a "very high" thermal stress.

A note from the union indicates that yesterday temperatures of up to 39 degrees were recorded in the south of Tenerife, to which, it adds, between 4 and 6 degrees more must be added inside the greenhouses.

The general secretary of the Agri-Food Union of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Juan Plasencia, points out that in most greenhouses companies do not facilitate access to drinking or fresh water for workers and that there are few rest areas or dining rooms that have shade and decent hygienic services.

Among the measures proposed by the union is the need for companies to provide cool areas for rest and recovery, as well as additional personnel to give workers the freedom to interrupt work.

It also asks that training be given to those in charge so that they know how to recognize the signs of a heat disorder and know first aid techniques and that a heat alert committee be established in spring in anticipation of high temperatures.

The union also demands that double shifts and overtime be avoided.
