Coalition Canaria has described as "deplorable" that just 24 hours before the Rally de Tierra Isla de los Volcanes-Trofeo Ciudad de Arrecife is held, "the Island Council has decided not to authorize it." "They thus demonstrate the total inability of the government partners to reach a consensus and find a balance between environmental conservation and the development of the aforementioned event," the nationalists point out.
"The unfortunate decision of the institution will have serious consequences for the island, both economically and in terms of image, which PSOE and Podemos do not seem to have taken into account and which will be a real blow to the battered island economy, which was beginning to see the light after the crisis caused by the pandemic," says Coalición Canaria.
"Just two days ago we invited the Cabildo to reflect and adopt a reasonable position, since they did not even work with foresight to prevent the test from coinciding with the nesting period of some protected species in part of the route," said the island secretary, Migdalia Machín.
Likewise, Machín asks "who is going to be responsible now for paying compensation to the participating teams, who have already been on the island for days with all their infrastructure prepared" and recalls that there are "more than 140 accredited media outlets."
"We cannot believe that in three and a half months they have not been able to find a solution that satisfies all the parties involved, destroying the important prospects that hosting an event of this level means for the island of Lanzarote," Machín emphasizes, who assures that the nationalists will ask the heads of the Environment areas, Elena Solís, and Classified Activities, Marcos Bergaz, "to assume responsibilities and give explanations in this regard."
Likewise, she hopes that "the rumors that point to a supposed threat from Podemos to the PSOE to abandon the Cabildo pact if the test is held are not true," and recalls that during the 24 years of its existence, ten of them with CC in the government of the first institution, "an alternative was always found, respecting all sensitivities and hobbies."
