Finally, the Isla de Los Volcanes Rally, scheduled for this weekend, has been canceled by the Cabildo of Lanzarote.
The drivers protested at the doors of the institution on Thursday morning due to the impossibility of doing the previous tests.
The Cabildo is currently meeting with the organizers of the event to communicate the decision to suspend the sporting event.
It should be remembered that the Minister of the Environment of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Elena Solís, requested a report from the Government of the Canary Islands on the impact that the Rally section could have on the Jable area. Said report said that it was "incompatible", and that the affectation to the flora and fauna in critical danger of extinction is "very significant".
In addition, several environmental associations such as Viento del Noreste, Papa Cría, Ecologistas en Acción and Transparencia Urbanística publicly criticized the section through the Jable of the Isla de Los Volcanes Rally.
Elena Solís maintained that she would "scrupulously" respect the technical criteria and that she "would not approve the Rally project" as proposed by the organizers. It should be noted that this statement from the Minister of the Environment was sent by Podemos, while the Island Council has not yet spoken through its communication channels about the celebration of the Rally.
Solís also pointed out that the organizers would modify the route, and they did so, cutting the timed section of the test by 25 kilometers. However, that modification had to receive the approval of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, and that authorization has not arrived.
