The Government of Canary Islands will allocate a total of 1.3 million euros to festivals and large-format cultural projects held on the islands during 2025. The Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture, Migdalia Machín, has signed the order approving the bases and conditions that will govern this call for subsidies, which adds to those announced last week for small and medium formats for 1.6 million. Both will be published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands in the coming days.

“With this call, we reinforce the Government's commitment to the cultural fabric of the archipelago, ensuring that even the largest projects can be developed with stability and public support”, stressed the Minister, who stressed that the objective is to “promote solid programming that connects with citizens, diversifies the offer and expands access to culture”.

The large format grants refer to proposals that have a cost equal to or greater than 100,000 euros, and are related to the performing arts and music (dance, theater, circus arts and music); literature (narrative, poetry, essay, dramaturgy and oral narration) or comics (graphic novel and comics); and with the audiovisual industry. In all cases it can be face-to-face, virtual or hybrid, but always with public attendance.

In the performing arts and music category, programming and exhibition of artistic residencies in scenic spaces; comprehensive exhibition projects in private rooms; festivals, exhibitions, conferences, markets, congresses, professional sector meetings, among others, are included. In literature and audiovisual, dissemination activities, seminars and exhibitions are also added.

Companies, non-profit organizations and self-employed professionals related to the cultural sector and with tax domicile in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands can apply for these subsidies.

The order authorizing the bases that will govern this call, as well as the details thereof, are available. The deadlines foreseen in them will begin to count from their publication in the BOC. This call is an initiative of the General Directorate of Cultural Innovation and Creative Industries, with the Canary Institute of Cultural Development (ICDC) being the collaborating entity.

In general, these bases establish the specific rules of this call aimed at projects belonging to the cultural and creative sectors, in order to promote the Canary cultural industry and programming in cultural spaces, open and closed, as a way to consolidate and attract new audiences, as well as its dissemination through physical and digital platforms.

As Migdalia Machín explained, “culture needs structures to sustain it over time, and these grants contribute to consolidating proposals that generate employment, identity and social cohesion in all the islands”. She also stressed that “public action in this area must be sensitive to the real dimension of cultural projects, which require planning, investment and vision”.

Finally, they are aimed at strengthening, stabilizing and diversifying cultural activity in the islands, promoting the economy and employment, and contributing to the dynamics of cohesion and social integration through culture, in addition to advancing in the achievement of the objectives of the Canary Islands Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030 through culture.
