The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of Lanzarote have presented to the municipalities of the island the Action Plan for Industry, a guiding document in which they state that "the priorities and strategic lines in which both administrations are working to advance in the development of a key sector for the future of the islands' economy" are defined.
The presentation was attended by the General Director of Industry of the Government of the Canary Islands, Yolanda Luaces, in charge of preparing this document, and the island councilor of Industry of the Cabildo, Ariagona González, who were accompanied by the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, José Torres Fuentes. Also present was the CEO of the public company Gestur Canarias S. A., Juan Miguel Martín, to whom the Ministry of Industry has commissioned the project.
Ariagona González expressed her satisfaction "with the inter-administrative coordination and collaboration with the clear objective of giving a boost to the development of Lanzarote, prioritizing absolute respect for its idiosyncrasy and particular landscape.”
For her part, Yolanda Lauces assures that her objective is "to involve and report on this roadmap to all local administrations with powers in the management of the industrial areas of Lanzarote with the aim of joining efforts in favor of greater industrial development."
Both representatives agreed to highlight "the growth potential of industry in Lanzarote, and the need to continue betting on promoting investment in industrial land with the aim of fostering the appropriate environment to improve the competitiveness of both newly created and existing companies." In this sense, they stressed that "it is important to work hand in hand with local administrations and management entities in each of the industrial areas."
Currently, Lanzarote has 4,238,485 square meters of surface area for industrial use, most of which is concentrated in nine areas of territorial scope, which are located in the municipalities of Arrecife, Tías, San Bartolomé, Yaiza and Teguise.
Action plan
According to the Action Plan, few industrial areas have management and conservation entities or business associations. In addition, in several of them it is necessary to reinforce part of the equipment, through the provision of new parking and rest areas and the improvement of the road network and other basic service infrastructures.
The preparation of the Action Plan is part of a project promoted in 2020 by the Government of the Canary Islands "to provide the islands with a detailed document that includes the needs and actions in industrial matters, and helps to contribute to the growth of the sector."
