The President of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, Astrid Pérez, attended this Friday the first plenary session of the Conference of Presidents of Autonomous Parliaments held in the Parliament of the Balearic Islands.
The day began with the words of the president of the Balearic Chamber, Gabriel Le Senne, and the president of the Senate, Pedro Rollán, who agreed on "the importance of this meeting as an opportunity to strengthen relations between the Spanish legislative chambers with continuous dialogue and effective communication, especially in a context where there are many common challenges."
Among them, Le Senne mentioned the growing tension that exists in parliaments, which “degrades the level of political debate and implies a lack of respect towards institutions and citizens.” For his part, the president of the Senate pointed out that “inter-parliamentary cooperation is a fundamental tool to adopt the best practices for the benefit of citizens.”
The president of the Canarian Parliament thanked Rollán for his willingness to collaborate with Coprepa by opening the doors of the Senate to all parliamentary presidents. “The legislature is, within the division of powers, the first institution of a democratic system. Therefore, at this time, when there is a significant crisis of values, we must work together to consolidate the principles of the democratic structure and constitutional values,” Astrid Pérez stressed.
“To build a better future for our community and for the country, it is essential to raise among all the need for debates to take place in parliaments - and in the case of the Canary Islands I believe we are achieving this - within political pluralism, from difference but calmly and with respect,” he said.
Astrid Pérez conveyed her congratulations to the new president of Coprepa, Enrique Ossorio, president of the Assembly of Madrid, who will take over from Le Senne in the position. “As president of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, we have made ourselves available to the new presidency of the Conference of Spanish Parliaments and to work on the initiatives, approaches and projects that lead us to greater coordination between all the legislative powers of our country, of the 17 autonomies,” declared the president of the Canarian Chamber.
