The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, expressed this Thursday his satisfaction for putting out to tender "very soon" the works for the integral rehabilitation of the José Ramírez Cerdá Park. The City Council was awaiting the approval of the new maritime demarcation that affects this area of the coast of the capital of Lanzarote, between the Puente de las Bolas and the building of the old Parador de Turismo.

The body with competence to carry out the demarcation of the Coasts Law is the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the General Directorate of Coasts and the Sea. This ministerial department, according to the mayor of Arrecife, registered on the morning of this Thursday, November 21, the order approving the aforementioned demarcation where the José Ramírez Cerdá Park is located. The processing of the demarcation was launched in the autumn of 2022, and its final approval was inserted yesterday in the BOE, and officially notified to the Arrecife City Council this Thursday, November 21.

Yonathan de León had requested Costas to expedite this approval, which would allow the recovery and integral rehabilitation of the José Ramírez Cerdá Park, created in the 50s of the last century XX, in whose design the artist César Manrique intervened.

The Department of Public Works, under the direct direction of the mayor of the city, has the technical project for the integral rehabilitation of this public space, known in the city as 'Old Park', and the mandatory authorization of the Island Heritage Area as it is protected by the work of César Manrique, and the protection zone of the Puente de las Bolas and Castillo de San Gabriel.

Respecting the footprint of César Manrique, and providing new trees

The restoration of the Ramírez Cerdá Park, which bears the name of the former mayor of the city and president of the Cabildo, has two central axes. Restoring the artistic work of César Manrique, favorite son of Arrecife and Lanzarote, and providing numerous trees to this space by the sea, within the projects promoted by the city, to create shaded areas with more beautiful and well-kept public parks.

Yonathan de León has pointed out that now Costas in the Canary Islands (the competences have been transferred to the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands), must issue the mandatory report to execute the works. A permit requested by the City Council since last year, and which was paralyzed due to the suspension of works due to this demarcation process.

The mayor has emphasized that throughout the month of December the City Council will receive this report from the Canarian Executive, and the Department of Public Works plans to tender the works, endowed with an investment of 2 million euros, in the first weeks of 2025.

Yonathan de León had expressed his wishes that this recovery would be part of the events that Arrecife is promoting for the 225th anniversary of its foundation as a municipality, which is being commemorated in this 2024.
