Arrecife suspends outdoor activities after rain alert is declared

The council asks citizens to avoid parking vehicles in areas prone to flooding

The Arrecife City Council has decreed the suspension of outdoor activities, following the decision agreed this Tuesday by the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands where it has updated the situation to alert for rain in Lanzarote from 7:00 p.m. this Tuesday. 

The Municipal Government makes this decision, given the information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the General Directorate of Emergencies of the Canary Islands, and the Security and Emergency Consortium, and in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands due to Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA), and citizens are informed that from this Tuesday, October 15, from 8:00 p.m., all outdoor activities in the municipality of Arrecife are suspended. In addition, said suspension will remain until the alert is lifted.

The Councilor for Security and Emergencies of the Arrecife City Council, Kevin Cortés, reports that the City Council has also decreed the activation of the PEMU – Municipal Emergency Plan - for the coordination of all personnel and areas.

The City Council requests the population, that, according to the provisions of the PEMU, they must avoid parking vehicles in areas prone to flooding, as determined by the wording of the PEMU.

Kevin Cortés, as Councilor for Security and Emergencies, to whose area Civil Protection is attached, has a large team of City Council personnel to be able to intervene, if necessary. On this Tuesday, an accumulated precipitation of 40 millimeters in 12 hours is expected.

The population is urged to follow the self-protection advice of the General Directorate of Emergencies.
