The Arrecife City Council has restored the 'Rose of the Winds' designed by the artist César Manrique for the Charco de San Ginés, which, since this month of August, shines again in its place guiding the two famous bridges that close this space.

This figure, with the four cardinal points, is part of the set of ideas and artistic details that the brilliant Lanzarote artist César Manrique supervised for the promenade that borders the city center, next to the church that gives its name to the Charco (a submerged crater), which connects the Islote del Francés with La Puntilla and the current Juan de Quesada street.

According to the Arrecife City Council, the compass rose, sculpted in granite on the pavement, was "deteriorated" and has been restored and replaced since the last days of July and the first days of August by the operators of the Roads and Works Area. And, the Consistory affirms that "some of these pieces had been loose for quite some time, posing a risk to pedestrians on the promenade, and others were deteriorated and broken."

Maintenance and beautification of the Charco de San Ginés

Likewise, the City Council points out that, among its first action plan decisions, the mayor of Arrecife has urged different areas of the Consistory to develop and activate maintenance and beautification tasks in the surroundings of the Charco de San Ginés.

Thus, the Parks and Gardens Area is pruning the palm trees and promoting the care of green areas, and the Cleaning and Public Roads and Works Departments are intensifying cleaning work in these weeks, even in the early hours, with pressurized water and disinfectants. For its part, the Public Lighting Service is reviewing and supervising the public lighting network. Similarly, the area known as Morro La Elvira has been cleaned of accumulated waste and plastics due to the orography of this place next to the Charco, where Manrique projected a waterfall with night lighting.

Finally, the Consistory recalls that "in this 2019, the city of Arrecife commemorates the birth of its most universal son who coined a style and design on his native island."
