The Lanzarote Association of Consumers and Users (Aculanza) has filed a complaint with the Prosecutor's Office to determine who is responsible for the works and the state of the Arrecife Ring Road. After the exchange of statements between the Minister of Public Works in the Cabildo, José Antonio Gutiérrez, and the General Director of Road Infrastructure of the Canary Islands Government, Juan Medina, on Radio Lanzarote, the president of Aculanza, Fernando Jiménez, wanted to know through this demand "if there is an act of negligence or recklessness" on this road.

The Cabildo councilor [declared on Radio Lanzarote that the "technical director of the work" had been "six months without coming to Lanzarote". ->71204] However, a day later, [Juan Medina assured that he had met with Gutiérrez "no more than 20 days ago" in Tenerife ->71266] and that the project director "came to Lanzarote every week". Hours after Ventura's statements, [the Cabildo sent a statement reiterating his words. ->71323]

Therefore, Aculanza has decided to put this issue in the Prosecutor's Office, because it considers that the Arrecife Ring Road involves "a risk, possibly vital". For the association, this road should be "as accessible as possible" for "good circulation", especially for emergency resources.

In addition, it asks whether "the poor maintenance of the road is the responsibility of the Cabildo". "Knowing in advance for several years that action will be taken on the road, it has stopped doing the conservation, possibly to save costs," the group said, something that was also reflected by the General Director of Infrastructure of the Government of the Canary Islands on Radio Lanzarote.

The consumer group of Lanzarote has recalled that the works of the Ring Road have been announced "for years" and although "repeatedly" items have been included in the budgets of the Government of the Canary Islands to execute these works, the project did not begin until September 2011. "It is a very unfortunate attitude of little foresight and a clear irresponsibility," Aculanza has determined.

"A more than regrettable state"

Aculanza has also pointed out that the state of the Arrecife Ring Road is "more than regrettable" and "unsustainable" and has recalled that [last Sunday there was a multiple accident, in which an eight-year-old boy was injured->71090]. In addition, the consumer association has insisted that the poor condition of this road makes the expense of drivers increase, since the wheels or shock absorbers suffer on this road. "It implies an economic surcharge for the user of the road, in an unjustified way after so many years".

Aculanza has warned that despite the situation of this road "there is not even the slightest action of safe conservation of the road". In this sense, it has pointed out that the climatic conditions of Lanzarote, a windy island, require "a perfect state of the road".
