A Spanair plane, coming from Barcelona, which was scheduled to arrive on the island at 10:00 in the morning, had to be diverted to Malaga airport due to a technical failure in mid-flight. The commander decided to land at the Andalusian airport rather than continue the flight. Its 141 passengers have been transferred to a hotel in Malaga while waiting to resume their trip to Lanzarote.
The aircraft, an MD-82, the same model as the one that crashed last Wednesday at Barajas airport. They are expected to travel to the Island at 14:20 (peninsular time) this Monday, August 25, after the company has rescheduled the flight. The estimated arrival, if there is no new incident, has been set for 15:05 (Canarian time), as reported by Spanair sources in Lanzarote
The company has confirmed that the flight from Lanzarote to Bilbao that was going to use the same aircraft has been canceled. The passengers who have been stranded on the island have also been transferred to a hotel in the Puerto del Carmen area until this Monday, August 25, when they will resume their trip.
