Hotel Los Fariones is this year the only hotel in Lanzarote to be awarded the prestigious "TUI Umwelt Champion" award for excellence in environmental management.

Within this ranking of the best hotels in the world, Spanish hotels stand out in a very special way. Among the hundreds of hotels in the world that participated in the competition, Spain concentrates 23 hotels out of the 100 that have been worthy of the TUI Umwelt Champion 2008. Of these, practically half are Canary Island hotels, with six in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and five in the province of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The TUI Environmental Champion award was established 12 years ago, transforming over time into one of the most rigorous tests that can be done to measure the environmental quality of hotel management and the degree of satisfaction that this brings to customers.

On the other hand, the president of Asolan, Francisco Armas, signed a collaboration agreement with TUI to increase environmental management in Lanzarote's hotels. Thanks to this initiative, which will be implemented in the coming months, the island's accommodation establishments will apply new measures to combat climate change.

The event held at the Hotel Los Fariones was attended by the Councilor of the Lanzarote Tourist Board, María José Docal; the island director of the General Administration of Lanzarote, Carmelo García Déniz; the mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz Saavedra; and the Tourism councilors of the municipalities of Tías and Yaiza. On behalf of TUI, Alejandro Hidalgo, Director of Environment and Sustainable Development of TUI for Spain and the Dominican Republic, and Monique Lupgens, Director of TUI Spain in Lanzarote, participated.

From now on, and thanks to this new line of collaboration between TUI and the Insular Association of Hotel and Apartment Businessmen of Lanzarote, ASOLAN will distribute among its associates "the practical guide for the application of good environmental management in the tourism industry" prepared by TUI Germany since the late 90s of the last century.

The president of ASOLAN, Francisco Armas, said in the subsequent press conference that "in Lanzarote we are very aware of the environment and we have been the architects of the creation of the so-called Biosphere Hotels" and added, "that now we are also innovating in our accommodation complexes with the incorporation of absorption systems to generate air conditioning in hotels with solar panels.
