The Santo Domingo Convent of Teguise hosted last Friday the Academic Act of Inauguration of the 2018/2019 academic year of the UNED of Lanzarote, which was presided over by Ana María García Serrano, Vice-Rector of Methodology and Innovation, the Minister of Education of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Carmen Rosa Márquez, the Councilor of Education of Teguise, Francisco Javier Díaz, as well as the director of the center, Andrés Martín Duque.
The inaugural lecture entitled 'Woman and Constitution' was given by Elisa Pérez Vera, Doctor of Law and Emeritus Professor of Private International Law at UNED. Pérez Vera, recently appointed elective advisor to the Council of State, has also been a magistrate of the Constitutional Court (2001-2012) and rector of UNED from November 1982 to October 1987, being the first female rector of a public university in Spain. The prizes that the UNED Gender Studies Center annually convenes to recognize research work related to gender/feminism are named after her.
During the event, the Minister of Education of the Cabildo, Carmen Rosa Márquez, stressed "the magnificent public service that the UNED of Lanzarote has been carrying out in its almost 45 years of history and that is maintained today with a wide academic offer and with more than 500 students." Likewise, Márquez highlighted the "involvement of the Cabildo de Lanzarote to reinforce not only the educational quality of the UNED, but also the offer of new degrees for the coming year".
Finally, the certificates were presented to the students who finished their studies during the past academic year 2017/18. For his part, the director of the center, Andrés Martín Duque, after congratulating the students, highlighted the main lines of the 2018 Annual Management Plan of the UNED of Lanzarote "which has as main objectives the reduction of early abandonment of new students, the consolidation of alliance policies and the quality management of the center's processes".
