A "Tribute to the Sailors of the Cruz del Mar" was the reason for the celebration of the VIII Tahod Folk Festival - José Marcial Viñoly Miranda Memorial, which brought together fans at the San Bartolomé Theater last Saturday.
The Festival began with the performance of a trio of young people committed to the musical traditions of our land. Gabriel, a promise, on the timple. José Vicente, the reveler, stood out on the guitar, and the young Sara Bermúdez, a voice for the Canary Islands, as a soloist. They chose four songs for their performance. Two instrumentals and two sung, which were fervently applauded by the public.
The Tahod Folk Group, which was also in charge of organizing this Festival, took over. They performed five songs distributed in folias, isas, malagueñas, polka majorera and berlina. At the end of their performance, a video dedicated to the tragedy that occurred on November 28, 1978 was shown, when seven of the ten crew members who had gone to work at the Canarian-Saharan Bank on the "Cruz del Mar" fishing boat were murdered.
After the screening, the emotion rose to the stage. One of the survivors of the tragedy and the son of another of them, who could not travel from Tenerife where he currently resides, together with relatives of the deceased, received a gift that was given by the members of the Tahod Folk Group. The applause of the public standing for several minutes gave shape to one of the most emotional moments of the night.
"Amigos de Portonao" offered a selected repertoire with seafaring flavor, composed of songs included in their albums "Sails and Winds of the Past" and "Between Masts and Volcanoes". Applauded and requested on several occasions, they ended their performance. Afterwards, all the participants were given a gift, as was the family of the young José Marcial Viñoly Miranda. Once the event, which was presented by Francisco José Navarro, concluded, both the participants and the attending public were invited to taste a Canarian enyesque at the Güime Socio-Cultural Center.
